BBC Radio Manchester's popular Saturday morning show, 'Becky's Retail Therapy' interviewed Silkmoth's Keith Jones again today. Broadcasting from the bustling Wintergarden Market at the Arndale Centre in the heart of Manchester, host Becky Want discussed online shopping, its security and how consumers can shop locally on the Internet.
"It's easy for people to check whether a web site is trustworthy", said Keith. "At the point where they're asked for their credit cards details, they should see a small padlock icon in the browser. That indicates it's a secure site. The risks to the consumer are probably smaller than shopping in a traditional retail outlet or restaurant. They can also look for a logo of one of the suppliers of secure certificates like Thawte or Verisign".
"But lots of people want to feel that they're shopping locally, can they do that on the internet?"
"Well, yes," Keith replied, "Google is starting a project to deliver local results at the very top of its listings. This is a major opportunitiy for businesses as well as being very useful for consumers. At Silkmoth we help people to set up online business properly and local search can be an important part of that."
But it's possible for even the smallest business to trade online successfully. "As long as they get proper advice, from a company such as Silkmoth, they'll be able to reach customers online much faster and more cheaply than if they set up in the High Street".
